Arkansas football is entering the closing stretch on a whirlwind transfer window.

The portal closes Friday, and the Razorbacks have brought in 40 transfers thus far. Players can still sign after the window closes, but arenโ€™t able to enter the portal. Arkansasโ€™ transfer class ranks 25th nationally and 12th in the SEC, according to 247Sports, while On3, which weighs talent gained against talent lost, has the Hogs 12th in the country and 5th in the SEC.

Arkansas football coach Ryan Silverfield has made some true splash additions, such as Louisiana offensive tackle Bryant Williams, Kentucky edge rusher Steven Soles Jr. and North Carolina linebacker Khmori House. But many of the Razorbacksโ€™ more recent additions havenโ€™t been nearly as flashy. Arkansasโ€™ roster needed a major overhaul, so itโ€™s normal to bring in some depth pieces โ€“ everybody needs backups, and not everyone can be a starter.

There might be more to this apparent dropoff in quality.

โ€œI think itโ€™s fair to ask the question, โ€˜Have they run out of money?โ€™โ€ Wess Moore of Moore Sports said Tuesday, referring to Arkansas hosting Division II transfer defensive back Kyeaure Magloire for a visit. He signed with the Hogs on Friday.

โ€œDoes he have the impressive offer list weโ€™ve seen from some of these other portal signings?โ€ Moore wondered aloud. โ€œNo. Not at all. Iโ€™m not going to try to sugarcoat it.โ€

Indeed, WholeHogSportsโ€™ Richard Davenport said Silverfield has been working the phone lines as the portal window winds down.

โ€œFrom what I understand, Coach Silverfield is making a lot of phone calls to boosters himself, trying to raise money for the roster,โ€ Davenport said on 103.7 The Buzzโ€™s DriveTime Sports on Wednesday. โ€œItโ€™s kind of a situation where if he makes a few phone calls at night and theyโ€™re successful, you may see a higher tier prospect at those positions.โ€

Co-host Randy Rainwater harkened back to much older days of radio and black-and-white television, describing his activity as โ€œdialing for dollars.โ€

Itโ€™s worth a closer look before sounding any alarm bells.
