Ryan Silverfield has been hard at work on the recruiting trail ahead of National Signing Day, but that’s not the only thing on his to-do list as the new Arkansas football coach.
He must also build his first staff with the Razorbacks, with the most high-profile hires being his offensive and defensive coordinators.
While he has an offensive background, Silverfield has never been a play-caller and that will continue in Fayetteville – but he’ll still have a hands-on approach.
“This job requires being a CEO and I understand that,” Silverfield said on the Hog Pod. “I won’t be a play caller, but there’s going to be times…you’re going to come out to practice and you’re going to say, ‘Is that Coach Silverfield on all fours, moving a guy’s ankle three inches to the left?’
“In between the white lines, it’s on. I’m going to be running around like a lunatic.”
That means the energetic 45-year-old will need someone else to run the Razorbacks’ offense. With that in mind, Best of Arkansas Sports tasked its two Adams – Ford, who is more analytically based; and Beene, who has a coaching background – to make the case for and against a handful of possibilities.
Potential OCs for Arkansas Football
Tim Cramsey — Memphis OC (2022-present)
Previously: Marshall OC (2018-21), Sam Houston State OC (2017), Nevada OC (2016), Montana State OC (2013-15), FIU OC (2012), New Hampshire OC (2009-11)
Age: 50
UPDATE (Dec. 5): According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Ryan Silverfield is bringing Tim Cramsey to Fayetteville as his offensive coordinator. He was the play caller in Memphis the last four seasons, ranking inside the top 25 nationally in scoring offense each year after inheriting a unit that ranked 52nd and 44th the two years prior to his arrival.
The Case For Cramsey
Tim Cramsey doesn’t just offer strong familiarity with Ryan Silverfield, but he’s a very good offensive coordinator in his own right. His last three Memphis offenses have each averaged more than 34 points per game and finished in the top-20 of the Offensive SP+ rankings. He’s a Chip Kelly disciple, having played and coached under him at New Hampshire, and he’s meshed perfectly with Silverfield, combining an NFL approach to developing linemen with a very college-style emphasis on speed at the skill positions.
Fast guys who were underutilized in previous Razorback offenses (like Isaiah Sategna) won’t be wasted by Cramsey’s offense. A lot of what Cramsey’s been doing his whole career, like zone blocking and tons of pre-snap motion, is very trendy right now in the analytics world.
