The transfer portal is entering its 11th hour, and Arkansas football coach Ryan Silverfield is trying to go out with a bang.
While players already in the portal can sign later on, Friday was the last day to enter. The Razorbacks closed out the week with a flurry of six commitments, bringing their total haul up to 40 transfers thus far. With the secondary still among Arkansasโ biggest needs, it was no surprise to see four of those pledges come from defensive backs.
By far the most noteworthy addition was Coloradoโs Carter Stoutmire, who tallied 37 tackles in eight games last year with a solid 72.4 PFF grade. Over three seasons with the Buffaloes, the Plano, Texas, native made 15 starts and racked up 90 tackles, 12 pass deflections and 2 forced fumbles. The former three-star recruit has one year of remaining eligibility and is ranked as the No. 74 safety in the portal, per On3.
The Razorbacks finally exacted some revenge on Deion โCoach Primeโ Sanders, who had opened up quite the pipeline from Arkansas to the Rockies. Defensive back Myles Slusher and defensive lineman Jordan Domineck transferred to Colorado ahead of the 2023 season, with defensive lineman Taurean Carter, cornerback RJ Johnson and running back Isaiah Augustave following suit the next offseason.
As a multi-year contributor at the Power Four level, Stoutmire was an understandably intriguing option for Arkansas. In fact, after his sophomore season, a certain coach tried to coax Stoutmire into the transfer portal.
Coach Prime was having none of it.
โCarter got offered a bag!โ Sanders told his team at a practice in April. โVirginia, you gotta stop. I let you have one and didnโt say nothing about it. Come on now!โ
Prime Example of Tampering
In hindsight, Stoutmire would have been best served taking the money and running to Charlottesville. The Buffaloes went a paltry 3-9 last year. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers, led by quarterback Chandler Morris (yes, that Morris) went 11-3 and came within a hair of the College Football Playoff, losing the ACC title game in overtime.
Ironically, the other Colorado player that Virginia was meddling with last year was none other than former Arkansas tailback Isaiah Augustave.
The Naples, Fla., native transferred to Colorado after a promising freshman season at Arkansas that saw him take 35 carries for 202 yards and a touchdown. In an offense that included star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman winner Travis Hunter, Augustave led the Buffaloes in rushing with 384 yards and 4 touchdowns.
