You almost have to feel bad for Kentucky basketball fans at this point.
Almost.
It seems Big Blue Nation is getting backed further and further into a corner each day as the offseason progresses. When John Calipari left the Wildcats for Arkansas, many in the Bluegrass State clung to the belief that the UK brand would carry the flame. Instead, they’ve had to watch their former coach notch better results on the court while continuing to lap the Wildcats on the recruiting trail. Kentucky’s win at Bud Walton Arena a few months ago is but a small cookie amidst so much crumbling.
With the commitment of five-star power forward Miikka Muurinen on Monday, the Razorbacks have the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class, per 247Sports’ composite. Kentucky, meanwhile, ranks 90th nationally and 13th in the SEC. The Wildcats have a worse class than Western Kentucky at the moment.
After a series of swings and misses with marquee transfers like BYU’s Rob Wright, Syracuse’s Donnie Freeman and San Diego State’s Magoon Gwath, Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope now has most of his eggs in Tyran Stokes’ basket. Still, the nation’s top-ranked recruit seems to be leaning towards Kansas as his prolonged recruitment saga reaches its closing stretch.
Calipari, too, had to get creative after the Razorbacks didn’t land frontline big men in the transfer portal. The 67-year-old opted for ol’ reliable, turning back to the freshman front with Muurinen and, if all goes according to plan, five-star center Obinna Ekezie Jr.
Pope reportedly tried to step on his predecessor’s toes in both of those pursuits.

Solid intel was hard to come by during the second round of Muurinen’s college recruitment. Before going back to Europe last year, the Finnish phenom had Arkansas, Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Michigan as his top seven schools. He took official visits to the Razorbacks and Wolverines, as well as Utah.
After he returned stateside, the Tar Heels were seen as the Hogs’ biggest competition — his mother played for UNC in the early 2000s.
But Kentucky, too, was hot on Muurinen’s heels. In fact, Hogville’s Kevin McPherson reported that the Wildcats tried to get the 7-footer on an official visit before he committed to Arkansas. Pope offered Muurinen in July 2024 and paid him an in-person visit in April 2025.
The 53-year-old couldn’t reel in the Finn, but is now attempting to thwart Calipari’s pursuit of Obinna Ekezie, Jr. as well.
Pope visited the five-star center in-person each of the last two Septembers and hosted him for an unofficial campus visit. Ekezie has taken official visits to Arkansas, BYU and Louisville this month, including those schools alongside Kentucky and Maryland in the top five schools list he released Monday.
