With the transfer portal officially closing late Tuesday night, all cards are on the table as SEC teams look to fill in their key missing pieces.

One new-age avenue for plugging the gaps is the G League, which Texas A&M basketball coach Bucky McMillan tapped into Wednesday by landing a commitment from Bryson Warren, a North Little Rock native from the Westchester (N.Y.) Knicks.

Another option is figuring out a way to keep some of your top talents from leaving, be that for a different college or the NBA. Thatโ€™s the dilemma Arkansas basketball coach John Calipari faces now.

All eyes are fixated on the Razorbacksโ€™ hunt for a big man, but the other major offseason question mark surrounds another sharpshooting young guard in Meleek Thomas.

The Pittsburgh native earned All-SEC Freshman honors after averaging 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals this past season while shooting 44% from the field and 42% from behind the arc. All this while playing second fiddle to Darius Acuff Jr. in the backcourt.

Thomas declared for the NBA Draft last week but left the door open to returning to Arkansas for his sophomore season; his name isnโ€™t in the transfer portal, so this wonโ€™t be a Boogie Fland situation.

In any given year, it would be a foregone conclusion for him to go one-and-done like Acuff who, to the surprise of nobody, announced he was pro-bound live on ESPN on Wednesday. But thanks to the other talented players who will join Acuff as future lottery picks in a historically strong 2026 draft class, Arkansas has a real shot at retaining Thomas.

Appearing on the Chuck & Bo Show on Wednesday, ESPNโ€™s Paul Biancardi said that โ€œitโ€™s 50/50 right nowโ€ on whether or not the 19-year-old stays in the draft.

One of Calipariโ€™s actions this offseason โ€” inactions, to be more accurate โ€” could provide a clue as to what side of the coin Thomas will land on.

Arkansas basketball fans got a dose of deja vu last month when news broke that Bryson Warren was exploring the college route.
