An Arkansas native got some revenge early, but a pair of Missourians had the last laugh Thursday night.
Zack Stewart delivered the biggest — literally and figuratively — hit of the game when he broke a tie with a massive two-run home run that lifted the No. 24 Razorbacks to a 5-4 win over the woeful Tigers at Taylor Stadium in Columbia, Mo.
The 450-foot blast gave Arkansas (28-15, 10-9 SEC) some more eighth-inning magic, completing a comeback that helped it avoid an embarrassing upset against a Missouri (20-22, 3-16) team that has now lost 27 consecutive SEC home games.
It’s the fifth time in two weeks that the Razorbacks have scored the deciding runs in the eighth inning, as they also did it in all three games of their sweep at Alabama and in Tuesday’s midweek win over Missouri State. Arkansas overcame early deficits in each of those games, too.
While it was a big swing for the Razorbacks as they try to stay on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, it was also an important one for Stewart.
The Lebanon, Mo., native spent the first three seasons of his career at Missouri State, where his father also played, and was once viewed as a potential second-round pick. Despite showing some of that promise early in his Arkansas tenure, Stewart has struggled mightily against SEC pitching.
Prior to his two-out home run that drove in Nolan Souza, who had walked in front of him, the burly 6-foot-2 outfielder was just 9 for 57 (.158) in conference play. That power, which has now produced 51 career long balls, coupled with Arkansas’ offensive issues as a team, has kept giving him chances and he finally delivered when the Razorbacks needed it the most.
The same could be said of Reese Robinett.
A dependable glove at first base, the Kennett, Mo., native has been almost as bad as Stewart at the plate in SEC play. After striking out in his first two plate appearances Thursday, Robinett’s conference batting average dipped to .175 (10 for 57).
But down 0-2 against Missouri starter Josh McDevitt, who had just talked head coach Kerrick Jackson into leaving him in after issuing a full-count walk to Kuhio Aloy, Robinett poked the right-hander’s 106th pitch of the night the other way for a double.
