First Glimpse: Who Lost, Gained Most Weight During the Razorbacks’ 2022 Offseason

The 2022 Arkansas football media guide was recently released and includes among its 186 pages the official roster, which features updated weights for the entire team.

That means we can now analyze the list and figure out which Razorbacks have gained and lost the most weight since spring ball and last season.

Those players didn’t necessarily work harder than others, as bad weight turning into good weight is hard to recognize in raw data like this, but the changes do give a good idea of which guys had to most drastically change their bodies.

Best of Arkansas Sports has crunched the numbers for every player and this is what we found:

Arkansas Football’s Biggest Weight Gains Since Spring Ball

These gains are calculated using the spring football roster distributed by the UA and the current roster in the 2022 media guide. Perhaps unsurprisingly, an offensive lineman tops the list, as Terry Wells not only cracked 300 pounds, but soared past it.

Behind him are a couple of true freshmen who went through spring ball, as well as Dominique Johnson. The big back had slimmed down to 228 last season, but is now back up to 247 — which is much closer to his freshman playing weight of 240.

  1. OL Terry Wells: +30
  2. TE Tyrus Washington: +26
  3. RB Rashod Dubinion: +22
  4. RB Dominique Johnson: +19
  5. **DL Jon Hill: +18
  6. (tie) OL Marcus Henderson: +16
  7. (tie) DL Zach Williams: +16
  8. LB Mani Powell: +14
  9. DL Isaiah Nichols: +13
  10. TE Trey Knox: +12

Biggest Weight Gains Since Last Season — Returning Razorbacks

Considering his full-time move from wide receiver to tight end, it should come as no surprise that Trey Knox has gained the most weight since last season. He had already put on eight pounds from 2020 to 2021, but added another 30 this offseason. Knox is now 40 pounds heavier than he was as a true freshman (see current weights for all players in lists at bottom of this article).

  1. TE Trey Knox: +30
  2. **OL Josh Street: +20
  3. (tie) OL Luke Jones: +17
  4. (tie) OL Terry Wells: +17
  5. (tie) DL Isaiah Nichols: +15
  6. (tie) TE Collin Sutherland: +15
  7. OL Marcus Henderson: +13
  8. RB Dominique Johnson: +12
  9. (tie) **TE Zach Lee: +11
  10. DL Jashaud Stewart: +11

Biggest Weight Gains Since Last Season — Transfers

These weight changes are based on how they were listed at their previous schools. Considering Taylor Lewis and Terry Hampton are making the jump from JUCO and Arkansas State, respectively, and will be playing defensive tackle in the SEC, it’s not a shock that they have gained the most.

  1. DL Taylor Lewis: +22
  2. DL Terry Hampton: +21
  3. DL Jordan Domineck: +16
  4. WR Jadon Haselwood: +11

Biggest Weight Losses Since Spring Ball

Head coach Sam Pittman was not shy about these three players needing to lose some weight and it seems as though they listened. Devon Manuel was still listed at 366 pounds entering spring ball and has slimmed down to 334. E’Marion Harris and Ty’Kieast Crawford have dropped to 340 and 325 pounds, respectively, since the spring.

  1. OL Devon Manuel: -32
  2. (tie) OL E’Marion Harris: -22
  3. (tie) OL Ty’Kieast Crawford: -22
  4. TE Erin Outley: -13
  5. (tie) DL Marcus Miller: -12
  6. (tie) DB Jayden Johnson: -12
  7. (tie) TE Dax Courtney: -10
  8. (tie) DL Cameron Ball: -10

Biggest Weight Losses Since Last Season

Manuel has gone from the heaviest player on the roster at 370 pounds last season to the second-heaviest this season at 334. Only Harris (340) is heavier. Perhaps the most interesting player on this list is defensive back Jayden Johnson, who has dropped 16 pounds since his freshman campaign. The fact that Landon Rogers is on this list was not a surprise considering his move from tight end to wide receiver.

  1. OL Devon Manuel: -36
  2. OL Ty’Kieast Crawford: -25
  3. DB Jayden Johnson: -16
  4. WR Landon Rogers: -13
  5. LB Drew Sanders: -11
  6. LB Chris Paul Jr.: -10
  7. (tie) RB Javion Hunt: -9
  8. (tie) DL Taurean Carter: -9
  9. (tie) DL Marcus Miller -9
  10. (tie) DL Dorian Gerald: -9

Biggest Weight Changes Since Signing Day — Freshmen

These changes are based on how the Razorbacks’ incoming freshmen were listed by the UA on National Signing Day in February 2022. While Harris had to lose weight, his fellow offensive line signees each needed to bulk up, so them taking up four of the top-five spots was not a surprise. Sitting at No. 2 on this list, though, is Rashod Dubinion. His large weight gain is likely to help him hold up over the course of an SEC season, as Arkansas expects him to be a significant contributor this year.

  1. OL E’Marion Harris: lost 30
  2. RB Rashod Dubinion: gained 26
  3. OL Eli Henderson: gained 25
  4. OL Patrick Kutas: gained 21
  5. OL Andrew Chamblee: gained 18
  6. (tie) TE Tyrus Washington: gained 17
  7. (tie) WR Quincey McAdoo: gained 17

Arkansas Football Position-by-Position Breakdown

The following list is a position-by-position breakdown of Arkansas’ player weights, listed from heaviest to lightest. We have also included the average weight of all players and scholarship players at the position, with the latter compared to how it was in 2019 before Pittman’s arrival.

In parentheses next to each player, we have included how much his weight changed since spring 2022 and how much it changed since the 2021 season. The latter of those numbers was used to calculate the average change among players with an available weight from last season.

Here are a few key takeaways from the data:

  • Surprise, surprise — Arkansas’ offensive line has grown quite a bit since Pittman took over the program. Every scholarship lineman is at least 300 pounds and they average a whopping 317.6 pounds. That is a significant increase over the 295.8-pound average in Chad Morris’ final season.
  • Most positions haven’t had that big of a year-over-year change, but the Razorbacks’ tight ends and wide receivers gained an average of 8.8 and 7.8 pounds, respectively. The defensive line had the third-most change, averaging a gain of 4.2 pounds.
  • With those weight gains, the scholarship running backs now weigh an average of 217 pounds. It’s not quite as big as the offensive line, but that’s still much heavier than the 199.3 pounds the scholarship running backs averaged in Morris’ final season.
  • Yes, quarterback KJ Jefferson has lost some weight. But no, he’s still not in the 230-235 range he mentioned before last season. Pittman doesn’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, though.

*For a players not on Arkansas’ roster last season — their weight change since last year is based on their listed weight at their previous school or in the UA’s signing day announcement
