Both before and after the commitments of Keyon Menifield and Tramon Mark, Eric Musselman and the Arkansas basketball team have been busy at work, contacting more players who could fill out their 2023-24 roster among the more than 1,000 who have entered the transfer portal so far.

It’s unclear exactly how many transfers Arkansas will bring in this offseason, as that will be determined by how many current players leave the program, but it’s certain that Musselman – nicknamed The Importer by college basketball insider Jon Rothstein – will stay active in the portal.

The Razorbacks have contacted plenty of players so far, based on reports by media covering the transfer portal.

This also seems like a good time for a reminder: “Contact” doesn’t necessarily equate to real “interest” – much less an offer to play for Arkansas basketball. Musselman has told reporters in the past that they cast a wide net and sometimes the contact is just to pick a player’s brain.

Keeping up with all of those players is quite the challenge, but Best of Arkansas Sports is giving it a shot. Below you can find here is a constantly updating list of transfers who the Razorbacks have contacted.

Top 15 Arkansas Basketball Transfer Targets

To put our own twist on it, we compiled a list of the top 10 such players based on a combination of metrics-based rankings (from EvanMiya) and traditional human rankings (from 247Sports/On3/Rivals). It’s worth emphasizing that this ranking is based strictly on that and not on perceived best “fits” or “needs” specific to Arkansas basketball.

A comprehensive list of players contacted the Razorbacks is below that, with players listed in alphabetical order.

1. Hunter Dickinson — Michigan (source)
C | 7-1 | 260
2022-23 STATS: 34 G/34 GS, 18.5 points (56% FG, 42.1% 3PT, 72.7% FT), 9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 blocks

As soon as he entered the transfer portal, Hunter Dickinson became the consensus No. 1 player available. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection at Michigan and was a second-team All-American as a freshman in 2021, when he was also the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. During his career, Dickinson has averaged 17.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.6 assists.

He met with Arkansas via Zoom on April 4, according to HawgBeat.

2. Kel’el Ware — Oregon (source) COMMITTED TO INDIANA
C | 7-0 | 210
2022-23 STATS: 35 G/4 GS, 6.6 points (45.7% FG, 27.3% 3PT, 71.2% FT), 4.1 rebounds, 1.3 blocks

An in-state product, Kel’el Ware played alongside Nick Smith Jr. at North Little Rock and was also a five-star recruit who was named a McDonald’s All-American. He was a consensus top-10 overall prospect in the 2022 class and was ranked as high as No. 6 overall by On3.

Projected by most as a one-and-done, future lottery pick, Ware’s freshman season didn’t go as he or anyone had hoped. He showed glimpses of his potential early, but his playing time dwindled down the stretch, leading to him entering the transfer portal and turning down the NBA Draft this summer. He is considered by some as the best available player in the transfer portal.

He is taking an official visit to Indiana beginning April 6.

3. Micah Handlogten — Marshall (source) — COMMITTED TO FLORIDA
C | 7-1 | 227
2022-23 STATS: 32 G/32 GS, 7.6 points (66.2% FG, 54.3% FT), 9.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.3 steals, 2.3 blocks

The son of a former NBA player, Micah Handlogten is a 7-foot-1 big man who was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year this season. He notched eight double-doubles and six games with at least five blocks. He reached double-digit rebounds 14 times, highlighted by a career-high 19 boards against Coastal Carolina.

He did a Zoom call with Arkansas on Monday and included the Razorbacks in his top eight, along with North Carolina State, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri and Virginia.

4. Aaron Estrada — Hofstra (source) — ARKANSAS DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT
G | 6-3 | 207
2022-23 STATS: 31 G/31 GS, 20.2 points (47.8% FG, 36.8% 3PT, 80.9% FT), 5.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.5 steals

Beginning his career at St. Peter’s, Estrada was named the MAAC Freshman of the Year in 2020. Spent one year at Oregon before transferring to Hofstra, where he’s been named the CAA Player of the Year each of the last two seasons. Estrada notched a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Pride’s upset of Arkansas two years ago.

He has announced a top four that includes Alabama, Cincinnati, Florida State and Kansas State.

5. Tylor Perry — North Texas (source)
G | 5-11 | 182
2022-23 STATS: 36 G/36 GS, 17.3 points (43.7% FG, 41.3% 3PT, 87.2% FT), 3.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals

Until moving to Spiro, Okla., for his senior year of high school, Tylor Perry starred at Springdale Har-Ber just up the road from the UA. He went the JUCO route before ending up at North Texas, where he was named the 2022 C-USA Sixth Man of the Year last season and the 2023 C-USA Player of the Year this season. After leading the Mean Green to the 2023 NIT championship, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. It’s also worth noting that he’s a 41.3% career 3-point shooter.

He has officially visited Florida and is also considering Arkansas, Baylor, Creighton, Louisville, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Wake Forest.

6. TJ Bamba — Washington State (source) — ARKANSAS DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT
G | 6-5 | 215
2022-23 STATS: 31 G/31 GS, 15.8 points (42.6% FG, 37.3% 3PT, 73% FT), 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists

In three seasons at Washington State, TJ Bamba shot 38.5% from beyond the arc and his efficiency from deep actually improved despite taking a higher volume of shots. After shooting 36.0% on 2.8 attempts as a sophomore, he shot 37.2% on 4.8 attempts as a junior this past season. He has also declared for the NBA Draft, but is maintaining his collegiate eligibility.

He is down to Villanova and Georgia Tech.

7. Taran Armstrong — Cal Baptist (source) — ARKANSAS DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT
G | 6-6 | 190
2022-23 STATS: 33 G/33 GS, 11.3 points (44.8% FG, 30.5% 3PT, 65.6% FT), 4.5 rebounds, 5 assists

Widely considered one of the best point guards available in the transfer portal, Taran Armstrong has spent the last two years at Cal Baptist, where he was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2022 and earned second-team All-WAC honors this past season.

Rising to prominence through the NBA Global Academy, he is also a member of the U17 Australian National Team. He posted a triple-double against San Jose State as a freshman, when he became just the eighth freshman in NCAA history to average 10 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists.

Armstrong’s final four are Xavier, Providence, Creighton and Gonzaga.

8. Chris Ledlum — Harvard (source)
F | 6-6 | 225
2022-23 STATS: 28 G/27 GS, 18.8 points (47.3% FG, 29.4% 3PT, 63.6% FT), 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 steals, 1.1 blocks

A first-team All-Ivy League performer this past season, Chris Ledlum is widely viewed as one of the top available prospects in the transfer portal. Not only did he average 18.8 points this season, but he gutted through multiple injuries last year and managed to average 16.7 points before shutting it down after only 13 games.

Harvard ran its offense through Ledlum, as he ranked 22nd nationally in usage rate and 13th in percentage of shots taken, according to KenPom. Listed at 6-foot-6, he fits the mold of what Musselman likes in wings, but he hasn’t shot the ball particularly well – either from 3-point range (29.4%) or the free throw line (63.6%).

He had in-home visits with Indiana, Iowa and St. John’s and will be officially visiting Indiana beginning April 6.

9. Joseph Girard — Syracuse (source)
G | 6-1 | 190
2022-23 STATS: 32 G/32 GS, 16.4 points (40.3% FG, 38.1% 3PT, 85.7% FT), 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists

There probably aren’t many better proven shooters in the portal than Joseph Girard, a four-year starter at Syracuse who will test the NBA Draft waters while also exploring transfer opportunities for his extra year of eligibility.

Not only is he the 17th-leading scorer in Syracuse history (1,652 points), but he ranks 13th on the ACC’s career 3-pointer list with 297. Over the last two years, Girard has knocked down 39.2% of his 3-pointers on a high volume (7.0 attempts/game).

He is hosting Clemson, Notre Dame and BYU on in-home visits before making a decision.

10. Jayden Epps — Illinois (source) — COMMITTED TO GEORGETOWN
G | 6-2 | 190
2022-23 STATS: 31 G/11 GS, 9.5 points (41.4% FG, 30.1% 3PT, 77.8% FT), 1.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists

A consensus top-100 recruit in the 2022 class, Jayden Epps was ranked as high as No. 72 overall by 247Sports before signing with Illinois. He averaged 24.5 minutes as a freshman this season, but was on the court for just six minutes in the Illini’s loss to Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament. In that game, he had only 2 points, 1 rebound and 1 turnover.

11. Jamarion Sharp — Western Kentucky (source)
C | 7-5 | 235
2022-23 STATS: 32 G/32 GS, 7.4 points (62.8% FG, 50% FT), 7.7 rebounds, 1 steal, 4.1 blocks

Another big man who stands at least 7 feet tall, Jamarion Sharp’s listed height of 7-foot-5 made him one of the tallest players in Division I. That helped him lead the country in blocks each of the last seasons, which earned him back-to-back C-USA Defensive Player of the Year honors. He began his career in the JUCO ranks at John A. Logan C.C. in Illinois.

12. Khalif Battle — Temple (source)
G | 6-5 | 175
2022-23 STATS: 27 G/8 GS, 17.9 points (41% FG, 35% 3PT, 89.8% FT), 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1 steal

A consensus four-star and top-150 prospect in the Class of 2019, Khalif Battle signed with Butler. He transferred to Temple after just one season and, after injuries were a factor his first two years there, put together a full campaign this year. Battle earned third-team All-AAC honors in 2021.

He will visit Arkansas on April 6, according to HawgBeat.

13. Tamar Bates — Indiana (source)
G | 6-5 | 193
2022-23 STATS: 35 G/2 GS, 6.1 points (39.2% FG, 37.4% 3PT, 92.6%), 1.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists

Once a top-25 recruit in the Class of 2021, Tamar Bates never quite lived up to those expectations at Indiana. He started only two games over the last two seasons and averaged just 17.6 minutes in his career. It’s worth noting, though, that he shot a respectable 37.4% from beyond the arc on 2.8 attempts per game.

He is reportedly down to Kansas State and Missouri as his top options.
