FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas baseball was back on the field at Baum-Walker Stadium for its fifth scrimmage of the fall Friday afternoon.
Best of Arkansas Sports took in the scrimmage from the stands. Here is some play-by-play, as well as a few takeaways/observations, from the day…
T-1st: Red 0, White 0
- Pitching: LHP Zach Root
- Charles Davalan: Grounded out to second, 4-3. Easy play for Souza at second. 1 out.
- Wehiwa Aloy: Smoked a single through the left side.
- Brenton Clark: Struck out looking. 2 outs.
- Aloy swiped second. Helfrick made a really good throw, but Aloy beat it.
- Brent Iredale: Hit a slow grounder the other way, but Souza handled it cleanly to end the inning. 3 outs.
B-1st: White 0, Red 0
- Pitching: RHP Gabe Gaeckle
- Logan Maxwell: Smoked a line drive right up the middle, but Gaeckle snagged it. 1 out.
- Justin Thomas Jr.: Hit a sharp grounder down the line and Iredale got a glove on it, but it deflected into the outfield. We’ll rule it a single.
- Thomas swiped second early in Souza’s AB.
- Nolan Souza: Drew a walk, putting runners on first and second.
- Ryder Helfrick: Popped out in foul territory, caught by the first baseman. 2 outs.
- Reese Robinett: Made solid contact on a grounder to first, but Rowan fielded it and took it to the bag himself. 3 outs.
T-2nd: Red 1, White 0
- Pitching: Root
- Iredale started the inning on first.
- Davalan (despite leading off the last inning): Tried bunting the runner over, but Root got off the mound and threw out Iredale at first in a bang-bang play. 1 out.
- Cam Kozeal: Hit a sinking line drive to second and after initially taking a step back, Souza came in and made a lounging grab. 2 outs.
- Rocco Peppi: Bounced a chopper over the third baseman for a double.
- Trenton Rowan: Hit a chopper to first that Anderson handled himself. 3 outs, but only 2 because the first out didn’t count. Peppi moved to third on the play.
- Kuhio Aloy: Nice piece of hitting on a line drive the other way for an RBI single.
- Elliott Peterson: Popped out to second to end the inning. 4 outs.
B-2nd: Red 1, White 0
- Pitching: Gaeckle
- Thomas started the inning on first. Maxwell tried to bunt him over, but missed it on the first pitch and that was it for the AB.
- Carson Boles: Struck out on three pitches, going down swinging. 1 out.
- Gabe Fraser: Hit a grounder to first and Gaeckle did a nice job getting over and covering first. 2 outs.
- Michael Anderson: HBP (Fraser running for him)
- Anderson (again): Fraser was running on the pitch, which actually helped the Red team’s defense because Kozeal was already running toward the second base bag and was able to get to the sharp grounder by Anderson on the other side of the base. He then fired a strike to first. 3 outs.
T-3rd: Red 1, White 0
- Pitching: LHP Parker Coil
- Zane Becker: Struck out swinging to start the inning. 1 out.
- Davalan: Flied out to deep left-center. 2 outs.
- W. Aloy: Grounded out to third for a relatively easy play for Robinett. Quick work by Coil.
B-3rd: Red 1, White 0
- Pitching: RHP Tate McGuire
- Kolton Reynolds: Popped out to second. 1 out.
- Tyler Holland: HBP (Reynolds running for him)
- Holland: Chased a pitch out of the zone for a strikeout. 2 outs.
- Maxwell: Flied out to left-center, caught by the left fielder. 3 outs. Nice inning for McGuire, aside from the HBP.
T-4th: Red 2, White 0
- Pitching: Coil
- Inning starts with runners on the corners (W. Aloy at third and Davalan at first)
- Kozeal (out of order): Popped a bunt attempt foul on the lone pitch he saw… Removed the runners
- Clark: Hit a line drive into right field for a single (essentially a leadoff single)
- Clark swiped second on the first pitch to Iredale.
- Clark swiped third on ball four to Iredale. Close play at third, but he was called safe.
- Iredale: Drew a walk. Coupled with the stolen base, there are runners on the corners.
- Iredale swiped second without a throw (because of the runner on third)
- Kozeal: HBP (W. Aloy running for him), loads the bases.
- Kozeal: Popped out to third. 1 out.
- Peppi: Flied out to right-center, caught by the center fielder. Plenty deep enough to score Clark from third, turning it into a sac fly. The throw went to the plate, allowing Iredale to also tag up to third. Runners on the corners, 2 outs.
- Aloy stole second without a throw (because of the runner on third). He did almost completely stopped halfway there to try to induce a throw, but Helfrick didn’t bite.
- Rowan: Drew a walk to load the bases.
- That’s it for Coil. Freshman LHP Luke Williams takes over and inherits the bases loaded with 2 outs.
- K. Aloy: Went down looking to strand the bases loaded.
B-4th: Red 2, White 0
- Pitching: McGuire
- Inning starts with runners on the corners (Carson Willis at third and Maxwell at first)
- Souza (out of order): Squared to bunt, but pulled it back because it was a ball (only pitch he saw)… Removed the runners
- Thomas: Struck out on three pitches, went down looking. 1 out.
- Souza: Tried to check his swing, but the third base umpire said he went. It’s another strikeout. 2 outs.
- Helfrick: Hit a bouncer to the hole between SS/3B, but Aloy got to it and made a strong throw to first to get him. That gives McGuire two nearly perfect innings, with a HBP being his only blemish.
T-5th: Red 2, White 0
- Pitching: Williams
- Peterson: Smoked a line drive right back to Williams, who got a glove up and knocked it down. He then tracked the ball down and mad ea perfect throw to first to get Peterson. Great play by the freshman. 1 out.
- Becker: Flied out to deep right. 2 outs.
- Davalan: Hit a sharp grounder to second. Souza fielded it easily to end the inning.
B-5th: Red 2, White 0
- Pitching: RHP Dylan Carter
- Robinett: Flied out to left. 1 out.
- Boles: Ripped a grounder by the diving third baseman for a hit, but was thrown out by Clark trying to stretch it into a double. 2 outs.
- Fraser: Hit a sharper grounder to the right side and Rowan made a diving stop. He flipped it to Carter covering the bag for the final out of the inning. Some really nice defense there.
T-6th: Red 3, White 0
- Pitching: Williams
- Runner started the inning on first (Davalan)
- Clark (out of order): Took a pitch that went to the backstop for a ball (lone pitch of the AB)… Removed the runner
- W. Aloy: Absolutely crushed a home run over the seats behind the left field bullpen. The only question was whether it’d stay fair and it did.
- Official metrics: 443 feet, 111 mph off the bat
- Clark: Hit a low line drive that landed where the infield dirt turns to outfield grass before bouncing into right for a single
- Iredale: Flied out to center. 1 out.
- That’s it for Williams, who looked pretty good before the Aloy homer. Veteran RHP Will McEntire inherits a one-on, one-out situation.
- Clark tried stealing second, but was thrown out by Helfrick. It was a good throw, but an even better play by Holland (the SS) to get over to it and then make the tag on the run. 2 outs.
- Kozeal: Nearly took McEntire deep on the first pitch he saw, but it went foul down the right field line. Instead, he hit a check-swing bouncer toward short. Holland charged and made a perfect throw on the run for his second straight fantastic play. 3 outs.
B-6th: White 5, Red 3
- Pitching: Carter
- Runner started the inning on second (didn’t see who)
- Helfrick (out of order): Laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third and nearly beat the throw at first. (out won’t count)
- Anderson: Hit a soft grounder to second for an easy play by Kozeal. 1 out.
- Reynolds: Hit an easy bouncer to third for an easy play by Iredale. 2 outs.
- Holland: More soft contact off Carter, but this one was up the middle and it deflected off the mound. Kozeal got to it just before it bounced off the second base bag, but briefly bobbled it to eliminate any shot at a play. It would have been a great play, so score it a single.
- Holland stole second without a throw.
- Maxwell: Singled through the left side for an RBI. Aloy might have had a shot at it, but Holland did a nice job of kind of blocking his view of the play and hopping over the ball.
- Maxwell stole second without a throw.
- Thomas: Battled to a full count before drawing a walk.
- Souza: Drew a walk to load the bases.
- That’s it for Carter. Freshman RHP Tag Andrews inherits the two-out, bases-loaded situation.
- Helfrick: On the second pitch he saw, Helfrick unloaded on the ball for a grand slam. Much like Aloy, he absolutely crushed it. It cleared the seats behind the left field bullpen.
- Official metrics: 447 feet, 105 mph off the bat
- Robinett: Drew a walk.
- Boles: Came up first-pitch swinging and hit a pop up that looked like it’d get in the seats, but Rowan made a nice basket catch at the wall. 3 outs.
T-7th: White 5, Red 4
- Pitching: McEntire
- Runners started the inning on first and second (Clark on first and W. Aloy on second)
- Kozeal (out of order): Tried bunting the runners over, but bunted it foul down the third base lone on the lone pitch he saw… Removed the runners
- Peppi: Lined the first pitch he saw into left for a single
- Peppi stole second without a throw (got a great jump)
- Rowan: Went down swinging. 1 out.
- Wild pitch moved Peppi to third.
- K. Aloy: Hit a chopper to short and Holland fielded it on a short hop and fired a strike to first. Another really good play by the freshman. 2 outs. Peppi scored on the play.
- Peterson: Hit a line drive into right-center for a two-out single.
- Becker: Smoked a line drive, but right to the shortstop. Holland caught it easily to end the scrimmage.
